THE WORLD OF ABSTRACTION

I have been painting since childhood. Started as a realistic painter as I was mostly influenced by my architectural studies. At the end of the 60’s a scientific event, the landing of the moon, changed my vision. In time I would depart from the figurative to immerse myself in the world of abstraction. The New York School of Abstract Expressionism opened new doors for me.

COLOR IS THE VEHICLE THAT DRIVES MY WORK.

Nevertheless, there was an interlude in the way I used color when I moved to Barcelona, Spain, in 1974. In Geneva, Switzerland, I met Maria Zambrano, Spanish philosopher and essayist who influenced me in many ways, in particular the colors in my palette. There I also met poets Jose Angel Valente and Michel Butor and with them I collaborated in artist’s books. White became my primary color - grays and whites. From that palette came a large body of work which I titled “The Language of the Clouds”. In 1992 after I returned to Florida, color returned to my palette.

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

To me the act of painting has to flow spontaneously; afterwards comes the manipulation of the work, but at the beginning, it is very intuitive. I enjoy the freedom of expression that abstraction brings to my work.

INFLUENCE

Born in 1935 in Cuba, of Jewish origin. Studied Architecture in Kent State University, Ohio. Work is influenced by abstract expressionism, especially the New York School Art movement of the 50’s. Lived in Barcelona, Spain, and in Geneva, Switzerland, where I met artists and intellectuals such as the malagueñaMaría Zambrano, the Catalans, Joan Miró and AntoniTápies, among others.
